Family Mediation Week 2025: supporting separating families

Family Mediation Week, which runs from 27–31 January 2025, shines a spotlight on how mediation can help separating families resolve disputes amicably and constructively. Organised by the Family Mediation Council, the week highlights the benefits of mediation for individuals, families, and the professionals who support them.

What is family mediation?

Family mediation is a voluntary process that helps separating couples resolve disputes amicably with the support of an impartial mediator. It provides a structured and constructive environment to discuss important issues such as child arrangements and financial matters.

Before starting mediation, most individuals are required to attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) to understand how mediation works and whether it is suitable for their situation.

Mediation can be a cost-effective and less stressful alternative to court proceedings, allowing both parties to reach practical solutions that work for everyone involved, particularly children. The process encourages open communication and cooperation, helping families move forward positively after separation.

Free events and resources available during Family Mediation Week 2025

Throughout the week, a range of free webinars will be available to the public, mediators, and professionals such as lawyers and Cafcass officers. These sessions provide valuable insights into the mediation process and how it can support families in reaching agreements on issues like child arrangements and financial settlements. A full list of webinars can be found here.
